Clipper Ship 'City of Adelaide'

Mr and Mrs Robert Bateman and their children sailed from London aboard the City of Adelaide arriving here on 11th October 1866 ¹. The passenger lists and newspaper lists give their names as Mr. R. Bateman, Mrs. Bateman, Miss Kate Bateman, Miss Emily Bateman, Master Robert Bateman and Master Henry Bateman. The family were passengers in the second class cabins.

Through diligent research we have learned the following facts about this family, and are able to provide some of their descendants as well.

Robert Bateman was born 14 Mar 1819 ² in London, the son of Robert Bateman and his wife Isabella (surname not identified). He was baptised at St Mary’s Church in St Marylebone Road, St Marylebone, London on 9 May 1819 ³ . No siblings for him have been identified for him at this point, but there may well be some.

Robert Bateman married on 14 Oct 1846 ⁴ at St John the Evangelist Church, Notting Hill, London, ENG to Elizabeth Fuller. Her birth date has not been located, but she died on 26 Sep 1899 at East Adelaide, SA ⁵. Robert died at the Royal Adelaide Hospital on 12 Oct 1899 ⁶ - just three weeks after his wife. No burial location has yet been discovered for them.

When Mr and Mrs Bateman sailed for Australia, they brought five children with them. Locating their records has not been an easy task, since their names were given in the papers simply as Mr and Mrs Bateman, Miss Kate, Miss Emily, Masters Henry and Robert Bateman. One of the daughters was not listed, but did arrive with the rest of the family. These are their descendants:

1. Eliza Florence Bateman, b. 1848, London, ENG; bap. 19 Nov 1848 ⁷, St Thomas' Church, Stepney, London, ENG; d. after 1915 South Australia; m. 24 May 1882, Christ Church, North Adelaide, SA ⁸ to Thomas Carr WILSON.
   Eliza Florence Bateman may also have been married to a John Clark at St Peter's Church, Williamstown, SA in 1869. If that woman is the same Eliza Florence Bateman as this one, she would have been 21 years old at the time, but the information contained in her record is insufficient to positively identify her. Eliza, who was the daughter of Robert and Elizabeth, did marry Thomas Carr Wilson, and had four children with him:
   1. Thomas Henry Wilson, b. 15 Apr 1883 ⁹, Adelaide, SA; d. 11 May 1884, ¹⁰ Hindmarsh, SA.
   2. George Robert Wilson, b. 10 Mar 1885, Adelaide, SA ¹¹; d. unknown; m. 18 Apr 1911, at the residence of the bride's parents, Gladstone, SA ¹² to Lily Victoria Dunning.
   3. Philip Sidney Wilson, b. 23 Mar 1887, Adelaide, SA ¹³; d. unknown; m. 12 Jun 1919, St Paul's Church, Adelaide, SA ¹⁴ to Mary (formerly) Bridge nee Gamlin.
   4. Frederick Rowland Wilson, b. 20 Sep 1888, Adelaide, SA ¹⁵; d. unknown; m. unknown.

2. Henry Robert Bateman, b. 26 Sep 1849, Stepney, London, ENG; ¹⁶bap. 25 Aug 1850, St Thomas' Church, Stepney, London, ENG; d. after 1915; m. 15 Jan 1872, Registry Office, Adelaide, SA ¹⁷ to Margaret McKay; and had issue:
   1. Henry Edward Bateman, b. 9 Jul 1876, Bowden, SA ¹⁸; d. 9 Oct 1913 ¹⁹; m. unknown - this man's death record states that he was married, but no record of a marriage in South Australia has been located.
   2. James Arthur Bateman, b. 28 Dec 1878, Adelaide, SA ²⁰; No other records relating to this person have been located
3. Kate Mary Ann Bateman, b. 1852, presumably in England; d. unknown - presumed to be after 1919 ²¹; m. 15 May 1873 ²²(double wedding with her sister Emily) to Carl (Ferdinand Julius) Paul ROSENHAIN. Her husband was the son of Carl Ferdinand Rosenhain and Henriette Auguste Levin, and he was born in Adelaide in 1850 ²³; he died on 13 Nov 1919 at his home in St Peters, SA.²⁴ They had issue:
   1. Charles Henry Robert Rosenhain, b. 17 Feb 1874 North Adelaide, SA;²⁸ d. after 1915; m 1 Sep 1902 at the Congregational Church, Hindmarsh, SA,²⁹ to Janet Evelyn Walkley.
      1. Kathleen Margaret Rosenhain, b. 19 Apr 1903, West Hindmarsh. SA ²⁵; d. 25 Apr 1903 at West Hindmarsh, SA. ²⁶
      2. Arthur Walkley Rosenhain, b. 23 Sep 1904; d unknown; m. 1 Jun 1935 Christ Church, Hindmarsh²⁷ to Alma May Cooter. It is not known if there were any children.
   2. Kate Marie Rosenhain, b. 1 Sep 1875 Adelaide, SA;³⁰ d. after 1915.
      Kate Rosenhain married three times - (1) to Sydney James Schmidt ; (2) to Hugh Hann; and (3) to Charles Herbert Kempster.³¹

      Children of Kate Marie Rosenhain and Sydney James Schmidt:

      1. Marjorie May Schmidt, b. 1 Aug 1904 St Peters, SA ³²; d. unknown; m. 7 Apr 1924 ³³ to Leonard Walter Douglas TOOTH.
         1. Walter Douglas TOOTH, b. 14 Jul 1924 Thebarton, SA ³⁴; d. 1986 North Haven, SA ³⁵; m. Alfreda Ada (known as Freda) Labram in 1945 at Hornsby, NSW . Freda was born 8 Mar 1915 in Adelaide, SA, the daughter of William John Labram and Agnes Annie Stokes ³⁶ [Great-Aunt of the researcher of this article]. She died at her home at North Haven, SA in 2006. Walter and Freda had two sons - Carl and Ian. Carl is married and has two children and lives in the West Lakes area. Ian lives in Port Adelaide and works at the Port Adelaide City Council office as a clerk.
      2. Xavier Rosenhain Schmidt, b. 14 Jan 1907 St Peters, SA ³⁷; d. unknown; m. 16 Jan 1937 Maughan Church, Adelaide ³⁸ to Adeline May Topham. No descendants have yet been located. When Xavier married May Topham, he gave his father's name as Hugh Hann, rather than Sydney James Schmidt. There are two marriage records for him - one as Xavier Rosenhain Schmidt and the other as Xavier Rosenhain Hann.
   3. Mary Elizabeth Rosenhain, b. 9 My 1877 ³⁹; d. unknown; m 11 May 1916, Presbyterian Church, Norwood, SA ⁴⁰ to George TAINSH; and had issue:
      1. Grace Erina Tainsh, b. 15 Jan 1917 Birkenhead, SA. ⁴¹Nothing further is known of this family.
   4. Ernest Ferdinand Fuller Rosenhain, b. 3 Sep 1878, Adelaide, SA ⁴²; d. unknown; m. 27 Dec 1905 Wesleyan Church, Norwood ⁴³to Adelaide Maude Elston. Nothing further is known of this family.
   5. Arthur Claude Levin Rosenhain, b. 18 Jan 1880, Adelaide, SA;⁴⁴ d. unknown; m1. 18 Dec 1907 ⁴⁵ at St Paul's Church Adelaide, SA to Elsie Wilhelmine Van Der Dippe. They had one daughter and the marriage ended in divorce. He m2. 16 Jan 1936 ⁴⁶ at the Methodist Manse, Brompton to Emma Rundle. There was no issue from the second marriage, and only one child from the first.
      Child of Arthur Claude Levin Rosenhain and Elsie Wilhelmine Van Der Dippe:
      1. Roma Valeska Rosenhain, b. 11 Oct 1910 Prospect, SA ⁴⁷; d. unknown; m. 20 Nov 1937 ⁴⁸ at the residence of Mrs. E.W. Terrill of Welland, SA to Frederick William Gardiner. No descendants have been located at this time.
   6. Frank Reginald Rosenhain, b. 25 May 1883 Adelaide, SA ;⁴⁹ d. 17 Nov 1883 Adelaide, SA. ⁵⁰
4. Emily Isabella Bateman, b. c.1855 presumably in England; ⁵¹ d. 13 May 1887, Adelaide, SA ⁵²; m 15 May 1873 (double wedding with her sister Kate) ⁵³ at Christ Church, North Adelaide to William Gordon (Russell) STEVENSON. He was born in about 1853 at an unknown location, and he died at New Glenelg on 6 Jan 1909, aged 56 years.⁵⁴.
   1. Frederick Richman Stevenson, b. 18 Mar 1874, Adelaide, SA;⁵⁵ m1. 1 Jan 1898, Christian Chapel, Adelaide⁵⁶ to Rosina Osmond Langford; m2. 31 Jul 1908 at the residence of Percy Short at Prospect⁵⁷ to Daisy Clarke. His first wife Rosina Osmond nee Langford, passed away on 5 May 1908⁵⁸at the age of 34 years. Her death records gives their address as New Parkside, and that she died at New Parkside. It is very likely that his first wife died from complications of childbirth, as there was a baby born to them just on a month before she died. Frederick and Rosina had only two children, and he had two more children with his second wife Daisy.

Rosenhain, of First Ave., St Peters, one of the best known watchmakers in South Australia. Mr Rosenhain was born in Adelaide in 1850 and after serving his apprenticeship he became a watchmaker in the establishment of Mr. W.N. Pratt, of North Adelaide and Rundle Street. He was afterwards foreman for Mr. D Fiminster who was in business in King William Street, and then he carried on business on his own account in King William Street. He was a Freemason, and a member of the I.O.O.F. and M.U. He was popular in musical circles, being a good pianist. He played for dancing at the Mental Home weekly for about 40 years. Mr. Rosenhain married a daughter of the late Mr. Robert Bateman, and his widow and family of five (Messrs. C.H., E.F. and A.C. Rosenhain, Mrs. M. Smith* and Mrs. G.    There is a death record for a Frank Reginald Rosenhain District: ADL Book: 132 Page: 316, but the father is given as John Henry Rosenhain. A thorough check of all births, deaths and marriages for children with Rosenhain (or variant spellings) was conducted on SA, VIC, NSW, WA, QLD and TAS records by the researcher - with the result that the only Frank Reginald Rosenhain born in the time frame has to be the child of Kate Mary Ann Bateman and Carl (Ferdinand Julius) Paul Rosenhain.
