We wish to positively identify every passenger and crew member by matching them to other references such as Census records and records of Births, Deaths and Marriages. We have, thus far, positively identified every passenger on the 1864 maiden voyage.

38 crew - Gordon, Alexander, born: abt 1850 Gordon, Alexander Errol Thomas Royle Victoria I believe that the crewman Alexander Gordon to be my Great Grand Uncle, (b.Brechin, Scotland 7 Dec 1849), who was Baker and/or 2nd Cabin Steward on three voyages from 17 July 1867 to 2 Nov 1868 when he left the ship in Adelaide.

Alexander was the son of James Gordon and Catherine (Katherine) Bruce and is believed to be related to the Bruce crew members. He is brother-in-law to Francis Gordon who was ship’s Steward - see previous entry.

37 crew - Gordon, Francis, born: abt 1834 Gordon, Francis Errol Thomas Royle Victoria I believe that the crewman Francis Gordon, who was the ship’s Steward on the four return voyages 1866 to 18 March 1870 to be my Great Grandfather (b. Brechin, Scotland 16 Aug 1833- d. Adelaide 13 Apr 1914). In addition, I believe his brother-in-law (and my Great Grand Uncle), Alexander Gordon (b.Brechin, Scotland 7 Dec 1849), was Baker and/or 2nd Cabin Steward on three voyages from 17 July 1867 to 2 Nov 1868 when he left the ship in Adelaide.

Francis Gordon with his Wife Helen Gordon (nee Gordon) (b Brechin, Scotland 7 Oct 1835 – d. Prospect SA 8 Nov 1925) and some of their children later emigrated to South Australia. They were followed by other adult children after the parents arrival.

Helen’s Mother was Catherine (Katherine) Bruce who, it is believed, was related to the Bruce crew members, hence my Grandfather being named John Bruce Gordon (b Brechin, Scotland 12 May 1868)

34 passenger - Henniker, Mr. James, born: James Heneker born 4 December 1826 Westwell, Kent Peter Chapman South Australia Originally arrived in South Australia on board ship Hooghly 17th June 1839, returned to England for a visit and returned again to South Australia on the maiden voyage of the City Of Adelaide in 1864 , passenger # 25.
James Heneker was a pioneer of South Australia and was very well known in South Australia. He and his family were particulary well known in the northern areas of Blinman, Beltana and Hawker where his family eventually grew up.
James Heneker was my great great grandfather.

33 passenger - Bateman, Miss Emily, born: Emily Isabella (Bateman) Stevenson Gavin Stevenson Australia Willliam Gordon Stevenson and Emily Isabella (Bateman) Stevenson are my Great Great Grandparents who were married on 15th May 1873 (97 years to the date before I was born). William and Emily had 5 children Frederick Richman (1874 - 1933), William Henry (1876 - 1892), Charles Rowland (1878 - ?), Emily Amelia (1880 - 1966) and Ruby Isabella (1882 -1882). My Great Grandparents are Frederick Richman and Rosina Osmond Langford (1873 - 1908), who also had 5 children, Irene Rosina (1899 - ?), Frederick William Henry (1900 - 1978), My Grandfather, Gordon Rowland Richman (1904 - 1936), Winifred Emma (1906 - ?) and Rose Emily (1908 - ?). Fredrick Richman re-married Daisy Clarke (1886 - 1978) in 1908, which resulted in the birth of Lorna Phyllis (1910 - ?) and Josephine Lionne (1915 - 2000). Frederick William Henry married Caroline Mabel Fischer in 1923 and had 4 children, Frederick Ronald (1925 - 2001), William Louis (1927 -2009), Maree Louise (1931 - 1999) and my father Robert Richard (1936 - ) image
28 passenger - Wills, Miss , born: Mrs. Mercy (Wills) Baker Narelle Marie McDonald Australia Mercy Wills, 10th child and youngest daughter of Reverend Francis and Mary Ann (Rumbold) Wills, was born on January 8th 1833, within the sounds of Bow Bells London. On July 26th 1865 she migrated to South Australia on the City of Adelaide clipper ship voyage, accompanied by her widowed sister, Ellen Matilda (Wills) Robinson. On March 25th 1868 Mercy married John Baker of Alma Plains; the service was officiated at Kapunda. Mercy and John Baker had four children. Two girls. Linda Edith and Mary Ellen Baker died in infancy and two sons Francis Henry and Leonard John Baker survived.
Mercy’s husband John Baker was born in Devises, Wiltshire, England on October 7th 1843, he was the son of Henry and Mary Baker. Mercy died at Hamley Bridge on April 24th 1912, aged 79. John Baker died at Hamley Bridge on April 10th 1924, aged 81 being survived by two sons, Francis Henry Baker of Hamley Bridge South Australia and Leonard John Baker of Yarran Vale, Mangain. New South Wales.

27 passenger - Robinson, Mrs. , born: Wills Narelle Marie McDonald Australia Ellen Matilda (Wills) Robinson was born in London on August 4th 1827. She married Harper Robinson on September 11th 1848 and had one son, Charles Harper Robinson, who was born in the Kensington district of London; he died 3 months after his birth. In 1853, her husband Harper Robinson died in the district of Skipton, Yorkshire. Ellen Matilda, a widow migrated to South Australia on the ‘City of Adelaide’ clipper ship with her sister Mercy Wills on July 26th 1865. She died three months later from a sudden bout of Rheumatic Fever whilst staying at the Burra on February 9th 1866, aged 38; she was buried the following day in grave 278 of the Burra cemetery.
