Donald Watson Western Australia Gnangara, Perth I moved over from Scotland last year. I have visited the "City of Adelaide" quite a few times, and have been aboard her. As you know, the original plan was to restore her at the Scottish Maritime Museum in Irvine, but when lack of finance scuppered this plan I was very disappointed. I am delighted she is now going to be saved. 50.00 AUD
Mark Pascoe South Australia Adelaide As an ex. R.A.N. engineer, the sheer beauty of this ship[and she still is a ship!] has attracted me to this worthy cause. She needs to be saved for us and future generations. Sometimes we just have to bear the cost and put the effort into saving something of such great historical value, particularly to S.A. We may not know where we are going, but it sure would be nice for future generations to knowa little about where we have been! This ship is one example. 100.00 AUD

Colin United Kingdom Edinburgh I used to pass the City of Adelaide every day when going to university in Glasgow - although I knew her as the Carrick back then. I remember her sinking at her berth there and have been sorry to witness her decline since. I hope you can save her and restore her to something like her former glory. 10.00 GBP
Tony Dickens United Kingdom Bristol Congratulations from the home city of Brunel's ss "Great Britain" which made 32 voyages to Melbourne between 1852 and 1876 bringing Australian immigrants.

From her rescue from Sparrow Cove in the Falklands in 1970 and return to Bristol it then took 36 years to complete her awards-winning conservation - so take heart and persevere ! All good luck to Adelaide.
100.00 GBP
Jacqui Carr Australia Melbourne I grew up in Irvine and worked around the corner from the Carrick. I was always a little sad to see it tilted in the muddy grubby harbour. I am really please that you have been working so hard to save this ship. It was obviously unappreciated in Irvine - as many things are. It is alone, though, I have heard of plenty Scottish hertiage items being brought over to Australia because the funding is not available to restore them.

Anyway, I am thoroughly glad, that a little piece of home will coming to Australia, and will mostly certainly make a visit to see it!

Jamie Varacalli South Australia As a BA graduate (English Lit / History) and currently an English (Lit) honours candidate at The University of Adelaide specialising in travel narratives (currently Victorian/Edwardian Orientalism), I have been following this story with great interest in the media. I would like to hope that government funding is forthcoming. The City of Adelaide has the potential to become a massive tourist attraction (locally and internationally) in the tradition of the Cutty Sark. The romance and adventure of ocean travel will always be of personal and academic interest, even when our grandchildren are flying to the moon. This is a most worthy project.

David Addison Australia Basket Range, South Australia My son, Jon, was Curator at the Scottish Maritime Museum from 2004 to 2007. We saw the ship in 2005 and the aim then was to destroy it. Jon can be contacted at the Queen Victoria Museum in Launceston, Tasmania where he is Curator of History. I was the Project Manager for the One and All. So although now retired, I would love to see the clipper back in Port Adelaide. Unfortunately, it's a matter of money, big money. 20.00 AUD

Hugh Howell Australia Captains Flat, NSW We must preserve this heritage. I still remember my visit to the Cutty Sark as a small boy in the 1950's and how it inspired me. Imagine a child of tomorrow remembering their visit to the "City of Adelaide" and being similarly inspired. 100.00 AUD

Ben Adamson Victoria 10.00 AUD
Ian Bremner-Macdonald Australia Wagga Wagga, New South Wales There is so little of our heritage which survives. We cannot allow this link to disappear. Commercial development has been responsible for so much destruction in the name of "progress" when progress should be measured by the understanding of who we are and from where we have come.

As one who is proud of his heritage and from a pioneer family of South Australia, I am saddened that there could be any doubt about the preservation of this piece of our history.

I hope that the "City of Adelaide" and all who have sailed in her will be remembered well into the future. She must survive.

NEW! - We now have over 1,000 crew records on-line.

On 6th August 1864 the brand-new City of Adelaide left the Thames docklands of central London to sail for South Australia with her passengers, 100 tons of coal, 11,300 items of general cargo (bales, cases, casks, packages and bundles) - and a crew of 38 men ... Read more >>
