Laurence Thomas Tulloch was born on 16th June 1855 in Fetlar, Shetland Islands, Scotland to John Tulloch and his wife Andrina Ursula née Williamson.

For the 1882 voyage of the City of Adelaide to South Australia he had transferred as an Able Seaman from the Mistress of the Seas, and the one-way trip appears to be the only one he made on the City of Adelaide. He was paid only a nominal one shilling a month, which indicates that he was working his passage by prior agreement.

On 1st February 1886 he married Louisa Elizabeth LePelley, 21, in the New Jerusalem Church in Adelaide. They had children Elizabeth Ann 1886, Florence Emma 1888, John 1890, Laurence Walter 1895, Tottie Ethel 1897 (all born at Port Wakefield) and Agnes Bertha 1900 (born at Queenstown, Port Adelaide).
