Cpl. A. Cornell, of the Port Adelaide police force, has been granted four months' leave of absence from to-day, at the expi ration of which he will retire. Born at Romford, Essex, in 1840, he went to sea at the ago of 12, and eight years later came to South Australia as boatswain of the crack passenger ship City of Adelaide. For several years he had charge of various craft engaged in ihe coastal trade. He traded to Port Pirie before the township was surveyed, and while master of the ketch Maid of Australia was the first mariner to navigate Port Broughton Creek. He joined the Police force in 1873 as a water-police constable, and 24 years ago was promoted to his present rank. He has been associated with the Port Adelaide division dmnng his 32 years' connection with the service.
