Departure

On the 25th June 1872 the City of Adelaide departed London under the command of Captain Llewellyn Bowen for the first time. Captain Bowen was previously the commander of the Devitt and Moore ship Chaa-Sze.

The City of Adelaide visited Torbay and then travelled down the English Channel in company with the ship Abergeldie for three days. Later in the voyage, on the 28th August, another ship was met, the Zoreda bound from Rangoon to Hamburg.

This would not have been a pleasant voyage at all. On August 30th, somewhere near the Cape of Good Hope, the City of Adelaide was hit by a cyclonic storm which lasted for six hours and caused some damage to the ship's bulwark planking. Fortunately, none of the rigging was damaged and the ship made it to Adelaide safely.
